Just recently my mother and I decided that we wanted to do a marathon together. I have experience in running and racing (nothing above a 10K though). My mom on the other hand has no experience running and is quiet a bit overweight, but really wants to run and loves going to track meets and stuff. Anyway, we just want do our first marathon...together. Our goal is just to finish. My second try at it is going to be for time but I want to be able to do this with my mom this time b/c I am excited for her and it means a lot to me. My question is...how long should she train, or in how good of shape/condition should she be in before attempting a marathon? Do all marathons stop the clock after a certain time and pack up and leave or do they wait on everyone..or do they make you stop if you don't make it to a certain point within a certain time, I have seen this done on some races on tv....also, do many or any of them have qualification times? I know to all of you marathoners this may sound like some crazy questions but I don't know much about how marathons go and am just wondering. So if you have any suggestions regarding any of this or anything extra that I didn't mention....PLEASE POST!! Thanks in advance!!
