Boston: why be so prudent?

I'm just back from Boston, and I feel like I know now what the major leagues are like. I'm a triathlete, not a marathon runner, so I was eager to obtain advice on how to approach/do Boston. I was grateful for the generous opinion of experienced runners, especially in this forum, but to be honest I have to say that I should have taken words of precaution with a "grain of salt". Everyone was saying to start slow 'cause haste in the few first kilometers = disaster later on. Result: I started way too slowly and was never able to make up for lost time despite a strong finish. My conclusion is: we should rely more on feeling in a race. I wish I had...
