Montgomery County's MitP is an excellent race. I did it and the MCM last year. The problems with the MitP are that it is smaller, at 2000 runners, so there is less camaraderie and there are infinitesimally smaller crowds. The asphalt pathway is generally good but you need to keep your eyes down to avoid tripping on the few bad spots. The weather is 3-weeks colder than the MCM, which means the start was very chilly but the race itself was comfortable. In general, the race management of the MitP is first rate, although this year SignMeUpSports has been overcharging, by $2, anyone with their own Champion Chip. MitP promises to reimburse the $2 at packet pickup.
I agree with you that if the Marine's website had simply said it was overloaded and would be back online in the evening, I too would have registered for the MCM on Tuesday night.
