My first marathon time was 4:20. I completely hit the wall at 22 miles. My second attempt was a 3:40. I've been improving ever since, although much more gradually. Looking back I didn't do much different between the first two races that could have led to such a dramatic improvement, except that I knew the second time out just how bad it could get, and I also knew that I in fact could get through it. You don't realize how tough having been through the wall makes you until you try it the second time. But the advice others are giving you is sound: experiment with fluids, etc. Tinker with your formula.
