I think a way to improve your time is to continuously train throughout the year without taking weeks and months off at a time. I have always had huge gaps in my training and I believe that has hurt my times in the races that I have entered. I'm always starting over because I let my fitness level decrease to embarassing levels. It is difficult to keep at it constantly and I have been unable to do it but I wish that I had been more disciplined over the years.
