Local marathon training groups are great! I took the class the first time with no intention of doing the marathon; just wanted to know more about it. Did the scheduled half marathon which is a good confidence builder. I came back the next year, took the class again and had a good marathon. I think being at home for the first one is the only way to go. Tell all your friends what you're training for and you might be surprised at the support group you'll have on the course.
