Eight years ago a doctor I was seeing because of a knee problem told me that if I continued running (especially training over long distances) I wouldn't be able to walk by the time I got to be 50 years old. He suggested I give triathlon a try because he knew I love cycling (but he didn't know I could hardly swim). I got into a masters swimming program and got heavy into cross training, with less emphasis - but quality training - in running. My knees are good now, I even PB'ed in the 2km, the 5km, the 10km, the half maraton and marathon last year. So, I like to tell "older" runners that cross training and multisports holds the secret to a longer and more satisfying running career.
