Interesting. I avoid the track except for interval workouts, so I have not noticed the phenomon you describe. I do most of long runs on a gravel rails to trails path for my bodies sake. On out and backs it usually calculates the distance fairly similar and I usual account any difference to the shading of the trees causing slight discrepancies. Regarding the travel issue, I have only taken it over 100 miles from home once, and it was having some trouble locking in and then it actually completely locked up on me. The manual does address the distance issue to some degree, but as I recall, 30 minutes would be considered a bit excessive.
