racing distances less than 26 miles

I have run marathons however I consider myself a former marathon runner with no plans to put my body thru the rigors of marathon preparations ever again. Today I feel my body is in better shape than it was when I was running the super long distances needed to complete the marathon distance. Before running consisted of a lot of slow running but today I will run a shorter (4-8 miles) distance at a faster pace. At the end of the run I feel better and more energetic whereas before I would usually feel tired and have sore legs from all the pounding. The farthest I race is 10K although 5K is my favorite distance. I tried a half marathon last summer but I felt exhausted in the first couple of minutes and depressed that the pain wouldn't end for another 90 minutes. It seemed like the whole field passed me in the first half mile and that was depressing.
