I've cut back on my marathon races also. Usually one each year in the fall but if I don't think I'm in good enough shape for a PR then I don't enter. I have to pay the late entry fee but in the long run I think I save money because I'm running in fewer races. However it would be nice if people were not monetarily penalized for entering late. Training for a marathon requires so many miles of training that it is easy to get injured. I'm sure it happens a lot where people enter 4 months in advance and later get an overuse injury. Or people might enter and come race day find themselves in not so great condition. I understand the need for the race directors to have an accurate count of the number of people who will be there in order to plan.
