I agree with Duke about Boston's start. Once everyone starts running, which takes a few minutes, it's a mass stampede. Oh and Duke, you're showing your age - 220s :)
As for tapering, I also drop my mileage down. My last long run is usually about 20+ miles, three weeks from the marathon date. The next week, I do half the distance of my last long run, and one week out from marathon, I don't do a long run. The speed I keep up, usually doing one or two short (5-6 mile) runs at target pace. Maybe also toss some tempo runs into the mix. But for me, the big issue is dropping the mileage from about 50-60 miles a week to maybe 12 miles the week before.
Since I do lots of cross training, such as swimming and Karate and weight training, I also start backing off on those. The weight training, I drop both reps and weight three weeks out and stop one week out. Karate I also stop doing a week out.
BUt this is my one method of tapering. Everyone has something else that works. Just don't go crazy from not running.
