Ian, the number of training runs needed per week depends on whether your goal is simply to finish or to finish in a decent time.
If it is simply to finish, then running 3 to 5 times per week might be all you'll need, especially since you sound like you're already aerobically fit from your triathlon training. I'm not familar with Higdon's Marathon Training Program, perhaps it can be adjusted to fit a reduced training schedule?
My philosophy is to put in quality training runs over quantity or frequency. Good luck!
