BTW, if you are following a plan (like Hal's plan...), then my higher-level advice is to stick to the plan. As a beginner, Hal's more focused on helping you build a "base" of endurance. Speed is secondary. As such, I'd only do speedwork where/when Hal's workouts indicate you should. I wouldn't do much freelancing by adding speedwork, including 5k's. If Hal says rest, then rest. If you feel like you want to do something on a prescribed rest day, then cross train w/ something else.
AFTER you get past your first marathon and see how your body did, then you can start experimenting.
Again, just my opinion...
