I trained using Higdon's novice program last summer. I still participated in the races that I normally would, but with a few modifications. If it fits into your schedule, you can switch the workouts around. I would sub the 3 mile runs on the weekdays for my 5K race on the weekend and maybe place my long run where the 3 miler would have been...make sense? I think its a good idea to participate in races throughout training becuase it mixes things up a bit and keeps running fun. Good luck!
