Christines mentioned a lot of great ideas. Ill just add one more
While scouting the race course, also find the best places for YOU to be during the race to cheer him on and provide support if desired. And before you leave home, decide what you can wear or carry with you to make you easy to spot, particularly if the race is one of the larger ones. Its often hard to recognize people when spectators are lining the street and youre really tired.
Some spectators carry noisemakers and signs. My husband, whos a really big guy, wears a bright pink shirt, his race shirt. Hell tell me about where hes planning to be along the course, usually the ½ point and sometimes again later in the course if he can get there in time. His shirt is really bright and I can often see him a long ways off in the distance which will really lift my spirits. Besides cheering for me, he also usually hands me a new bottle of fluids (I dont usually drink at aid stations), a couple gels and takes some pictures of me. I cant thank him enough for being there for me!
