I had a case of this, which is calcium deposits on my heel. I was not fun. I went and did therapy for it, and after only a month I was back to training. It's been 7 weeks now since I started my Marathon Training back over, and I am still feeling well.
I stretch before and after I run.. both my calves and my achilles. I will typically walk or slow jog about 1/2 mile before as a warm-up.
I am running almost pain-free now.. which is awesome. I think more than anything, the stretching has really helped me. I have also tried to run more loose and not so tied up in a ball. And I feel this too has helped me stay injury free.
The very best of luck to you in staying injury free. My suggestion would be though to check with a Dr. about this at your local sports medicine facility. They can help you get on the right track. (at least mine did).
