I ran Boston in 2000. A friend and I ended up driving to one of the train stations near the hotels and taking the train to Copley, then the buses to the start. It was great on both the train and the bus, because you got to talk with people from all over. The drive was long enough to get some really good conversations started. I recomend taking the bus if you can tolerate it. You get talking with your seatmate or the person across the asle and the crowded feeling isn't bad anymore.
Another year (1997), my friend had her daughter driver her to the start. She didn't have to get up as early, but she said she'd missed out on the comradrie from the buses in 1996. Yes, my friend runs a lot of marathons.
Enjoy Boston. It's an experince for sure. RNR girl
