My first marathon is June 20th. On Saturday June 5th I (barely) ran 20 miles, as my last long run before tapering. I've never been in such agony - cramps in the back of my lower legs and inner thighs. Another runner on the route came up and asked if I was okay. Obviously I didn't look like the picture of good health. My previous long runs were around 17-18 miles, without any real difficulty. I carried water with me, and had two power gels. My pace for the first 17 miles (when the trouble started) was about 10 minutes/mile. I know I'm supposed to be reducing my mileage over the next two weeks, but there's part of me that thinks I should be doing another long run next weekend just to get a little more comfortable with this distance. If I can't finish 20 miles in reasonable comfort, where I am going to find the strength to run another six? I don't see how I'm going to finish this. Is this normal? Any suggestions?
