I too had to consider the economical side of the question, since a dollar here and there can quickly add up. Personally what I found best was HammerGel. Not only could I buy it in the 28 serving flask ($17), but the added electrolytes helped fight off the cramping and fatigue. They also sell powder and electrolytes, which I have successfully added to my bottles during long bike rides. I know I had a tendancy to stick with the "bigger" names of GU and PowerGel, but this stuff is quickly coming on.
