I had to experiment a bit to see what worked best for me. At first, I wanted to use them as little as possible because they get expensive, but I found that if I took one when I was already feeling pooped, it didn't work. The trick is to take it before you feel yourself running out of gas.
What works best for me is to take the first gel an hour into my run and subsequent gets every 45-50 minutes thereafter.
