I'm not a medical expert, or even a seasoned runner, but my first marathon is next week, and I can tell you what I ate during all that training. I pretty much ate what I felt like eating unless I thought it would give me sideaches (like doughnuts or chili dogs!). When I wake up in the morning, I drink a glass of water right away. Then I have a Cliff bar and more water. After my run, I usually make a smoothie and then figure out what else I feel like eating - a sandwich, pasta, last night's leftovers, etc. before I leave for the day. I like low cal foods like yogurt and salad, but I know that if that is all I packed for lunch, I would be at the vending machines by 2, buying junk. Long runs make me hungry the rest of the day, so I pack snacks accordingly. Last thing: Back in high school, I'd eat junky food (a lot of Taco Bell) just an hour or two before cross country meets and would get annoying sideaches. So since then, I thought it would be better to get up in the mornings and run without eating or drinking anything. Last year, I developed gastritus when I began running longer distances, and I still haven't fully recovered from it. It is no fun. So be sure to have something in your stomach before running!
