Personally, I use a CamelBak (and before that a cheap backpack with water bottles in it and I'm sure there are other brands that work just as or almost as well). For me, there's no substitute for having water/sport drink available whenever I want/need it. I sweat a lot and consequently dehydrate more easily.
Also, it's great for storing extra clothes that I put on/take off after a couple of miles if I misjudged the temp., the wind changes, the sun comes out, etc.
Oh yeah, and I can run where I feel like rather than sticking to a set course, go out on longer runs, run where there aren't water fountains, etc.
You still have to find places to use the bathroom though. I'm hoping they come out with one with a built in catheter pretty soon.
I've also run with a lot of people who swear by their fuel belts (no catheters on those yet either as far as I know).
