overweight but want to do it

I am a "couch potato" and have never been inspired to do anything physical until lately. I watched a friend do a marathon. She could not even run a mile when she began training and how she is up to 18. This has made me want to run one. I know it is very hard work, but I am ready for some physical challenge in my life and think it would be very rewarding if i could do it. I am a bit concerned because I am 5'5 and weigh 160 pounds...so overweight. Does anyone know how long it would take someone like to me to train for a marathon? Also, I want to get a book that could help train and try to accomplish this goal because I do not have many ppl to ask since no one I know (except the girlfriend, but she lives states away) has ever run a marathon. Any suggestions for books? One last question, I want to make sure that I take proper precautions not to get hurt in the process...what should I do for that as well, thanks so much for your guys help!
