Walking a marathon

Have wanted to do a marathon for a long time. Worked up to the half-marathon distance, have done this each October for past 3 yrs. Slow pace, approx. 12 min/mile. Still, last 3 mi are hard (last mile extremely so). Because I'm 54 and a heavyweight runner(6'2", 230 lbs) this seems to be my max effort, especially when I consider getting to the finish line of this half marathon, then turning around and doing it again. I really would like to understand the whole marathon experience and I think it means walking, possibly all the way. The marathon/half marathon I do in Oct. has a 2 hr. earlier start for walkers. What is your walking pace per mile in these events?
