I ran Chicago last October as my first marathon. It was an awesome experience. It was crowded, but I had no trouble manuevering around runners at a 9-10 min pace. The crowds were so encouraging that you don't really realize you're running until the half-way point or so.
I've signed up to run it again this year. Last year, we stayed at the Hilton Towers right across from the start & finish line. I tried to make reservations there for this year & they were already out of rooms for Sat night. I was able to get reservations at the Palmer House Hilton about 1/2 mile away for Fri - Sun nights.
Most hotels in Chicago are familiar with the marathon & will tell you how far they are from the start/finish. There are so many close ones that you shouldn't have a problem.
The chicago marathon web site actually lists several in the area (www.chicagomarathon.com).
Best of luck & enjoy!
