To me this is an interesting question. I actually used elements of the South Beach Diet starting late last year to get myself back into running shape (after a 15 year departure from the sport). To me the Atkins Diet seems a bit too harsh. As I upped my training I did add more carbs (because the notion of passing out due to low blood sugar didn't seem so fun). As for research and references, the American Medical Association has a good website where you can find published articles. I also like WebMD and emedicine.com. I hope this helps.
