You can get the marathon rules online from the USATF. Go to www.usatf.org. Click on Coaches and Officials. Then click on 2001 USATF Publications Order Form to order the rules for $12 plus $3 S&H. Or click on 2001 USATF Rulebook to read the rules online. Go to Section IV (Long Distance and Road Events), then to Rule 132 (Medical and Safety Concerns for Road Events). The rules, as I read them, say officials must provide water at intervals no more than 5km. There can be additional aid for hot weather events. I don't see any prohibition against food or drinks from spectators, support groups, or spouses.
