My reasons for running twice a week have more to do with convenience.
By getting 2 "good" training runs in, I get 2 quality workouts and "train" the rest of the week by resting
Of course I pay the price, with less than impressive finish times. But just completing the marathon is an accomplishment
And as a former competitive runner, it does sometimes bother me to not do better in the marathon...
My first marathon on 2x/week was last year... I only decided the day before the SF Marathon that I would go out and run the full vs. the half just to see if I could do it... never know until you try
