I don't know if this will help, but I stuck to a 4 day training schedule. Maybe there's something in my schedule that could hit a cord w/you so here it is: my really long runs were Sunday mornings (at most 21 miles), Tuesdays were short days (at most 6), Wednesdays were kinda long days (at most 9 miles ), and Fridays were medium days (at most 7). I never upped total weekly mileage by more than 10% and the last two weeks I dropped them by 30% (36 to 26 and then 19). My weekly mileage never exceeded 39 (and I did that for only 1 week).

When I ran my first marathon last week I really didn't have a time goal (I knew I'd be happy just to finish, but I figured ~4:30 would have been great). I wound up w/4:00:47 (my fault for not breaking 4).
