I think it's a good choice, to run a marathon close to home for your first marathon.
My 1st and 2nd marathons were the San Francisco Marathon, and there is something comforting about the familiarity of the surroundings, as well as the climate.
After that, I ventured out a little further.. first to Portland, and now to Vancouver. It's fun making a vacation out of visiting another city to run their marathon.
