A 4 week taper is much better than a 2 week taper for a first-time marathoner, IMO.
Another thing you might consider doing, since you have a step-back week before the week where youre supposed to do your 20-miler, is running your 20-miler on the Friday before that weekend that you have a family commitment (and making Thursday a rest day) or doing the 20-miler on the Monday after it (and making Tues a rest day). Theres no rule that says the long run must be done on a weekend.
