One thing I'm sure you're all aware of is acclimation. Training on a TM in an air-conditioned room is far easier than running summertime roadraces out in the heat and humidity.
Another thing I noticed when using a TM almost exclusively was that when I did run a pavement race, my ankles were very sore afterwards. Training outdoors has improved my times significantly - and I'm not so sore after a race.
