Everyone either hates or loves the TM. I began using it a couple of years ago and can't believe i didn't try it sooner!
In the Syndney Olmpics, the woman from Alaska who ran the Women's Marathon trained almost exclusively on the Tread Mill.
Just remember to set the incline to at least 1 percent. This creates similar conditions to outside - wind that we don't even realize we are running with. Therefore, I use the manual settings.
