MICHELLE - You can do it Oldbird 1/23/01 3:56:29 PM ET
You can definitely do it. I started running Memorial Day 1999. At that point I was a little overweight and was not in very good shape. Prior to this point I had never really run. I started slowly and gradually built up my base. During this time I entered lots of local races, which I found to be very encouraging. Around Christmas of 2000, I signed up for my first marathon, the Flying Pig in Cincinnati. I bought a book called Four Months to a Four Hour Marathon and followed it as close as I could. In May I ran my 1st marathon in 4:09. I was so addicted I then signed up for the Chicago Marathon and the Disney Marathon.
Although everyone has different pieces of advice. I think one of the things that helped me was to think of running in terms of time rather than distance. This made my runs more enjoyable because I was not worried about covering a certain amount of ground. The other piece of advice I would give is to take pride in all of the accomplishments along the way. I can not tell you how excited I was the first time I ran for an hour non stop and then two hours non stop, and then three hours non stop.
