I've trained for most of my marathons using a mix of outdoor running and indoor running on a treadmill. I have even split some of my long runs so that part was run outside and part was run inside (due to weather conditions or to add some hill work to my long runs).
In addition to the speed on a treadmill being sometimes unreliable, I usually add 1-2% elevation to compensate for lack of wind resistance.
