may be helpful to others in the future. In Rome, ran early in the am (Sunday) on the streets (really the back streets) of the historic center and felt safe. The real place to run, however, is the Villa Borghese gardens. Wish I would've known about it earlier in my stay there. You can also run at Circus Maximus (I didn't get to run there). In Venice ran on the streets and managed to get lost on the way back to the hotel on a very cold, rainy (and some light snow) March morning ! In Florence there were people running along the Arno river.
