I think you both are right in your opinion.
There are non-running doctors have very little understanding in running. Then, there are doctors can treat complicated conditions that themselves never experienced.
I feel one has to decipher the information and decide for him or herself if there is big health risk in a activity like marathon.
The inspiration I got for wanting to run the first marathon was someone I knew ( was a non-runner ) had open heart surgery and decided to improve his health and run marathon.
He did about 3-4 marathons within 2 years of his operation. In the past 5 years, he probably did about 15-20 marathons. I believe he took trmendous risk. That must be a very personal decision.
