Heel toe or forefoot

I am 47 years old and have been running on the balls of my feet since my sophmore year in cross country. From my mid thirties on, shin splints have been my nemisis. Is this a characteristic of forefoot runners? I have been unable to achieve the "success" that I feel is possible due to this. I have recently taken the advice of other runners and reduced my time on treadmills. The whole point of time on the treadmill was to keep both feet planted evenly. (as opposed to the canting of roads and sidewalks. My injuries have kept me from being able to enter a marathon. My current schedule. My ex-schedule was 5 runs per week. Day 1: 60 min. run, Day 2: 60 min. run, Day 3: interval, Day 4: off, Day 5: 60 min. run, Day 6: Long run, Day 7: off.

Now I have chopped off one day of running. Replaced it with a spin class. (day after club/interval workout. eastsiderunners.com). Plus, I am trying to restrict myself to no more than one day per week on a treadmill. I am also doing either an elliptical, stationary bike, another type of cardio equipment for a sixth day.

By the way, I do not wish to enter a marathon just to finish. A coach mentioned Galloway's way of training the novice. "Run a mile, walk 60 seconds". How depressing.
