Doing the run/walk thing really extends how far you can go. In December of 2002, I had to lay off of running for several weeks and had 18 miles TOTAL in the month prior to the marathon; 12 were on race week.

I managed to get through the race doing the 4/1 (jog 4 minutes, walk 1).

I found that, due to my lack of conditioning, I felt horrible after 10K. But, from there until mile 23, it never got any worse and I stayed at the same pace.
