Could be he is in ketosis and needs too up his carb intake. Ketones are produced when there is not enough glucose (carbs) available and fats have to be used for energy. When fats are used excessively as fuel, they are converted into ketones. Ketone bodies (acetone) are probably what you are smelling in his breath. Just a thought.
