I am also a very slow runner...and as the years pass I have slowed. I am now 53 and if I can run five miles in 45 minutes I am estatic. I have improved over the past few months by doing intervals at least weekly and trying to run faster on the days I do not do my long runs (10 - 12 miles) I do not know your age but the two key elements for speed work are stride length and cadence. To improve you need to break out of your comfort zone for both elements and that does take discipline and hard work. I agree you should switch to quarters until you can run them under 2 minutes... comfortably. Try to do six with the walking lap in between. After three weeks return to the 800 and try to run under 4 minutes. You will find that you can!!
