I've been doing weight training a couple times a week since I was 18 and it helps. (I'm in my 30s now.) You want to have a strong core to run long distances. If it were me, though, I'd work with a trainer, at least once in awhile. I work with a trainer once a month. If I didn't, I'd probably have gotten bored with my routine. (I'm a coach and I work with a trainer and I know that my trainer, in turn, works with a trainer.)
