The fact that you are taking your time to get get ready for your first marathon, asking questions, reading, and preparing speaks well of you and your chances for ultimate success, and more importantly continued good health. Good shoes are where I would start. your feet take the first of the energy of running. Go to a good shoe store, where they will watch you run on a treadmill and fit you to proper shoes . And bring your old shoes with you to let them see the wear spots. Pick up some synthetic running socks there also. None of this needs to be pricey.Yes I think weight lifting should be a part of on going efforts to reduce chances of injury. It helps prevent weak spots as running like all activities works some muscles more than others. But you wil find some disagreement on this and it is certainly possible to run without lifting.
