Yes this can hit you suddenly. I had run for years, done 3 marathon, then on a 16 mile training run my left foot stopped me in my tracks at 12 miles. I walked gingerly 2 miles back to my car. Since then I self diagnosed the problem originating from a hip joint frozen up - causing my stride to be off and coming down particularly hard on one foot. I've corrected the hip issue with a chiropractor and the feet are on the mend with orthodics. Still, this years' race season is done for. Everyone tells me expect it to take 6 months to heal.
