I second some very good advice you've received so far on this thread. On the shoes thing, check them out and take them to a competant running store if they show any kind of uneven wear. (not a mall shop!) They will be able to see by the wear on them what kind of shoe will help correct your particular gait. As to the shorter fun runs. Read this 5K to 1/2 marathon. The competion from running these shorter distances will force you to run harder making you a stronger runner. And it might also even out your stride a bit if that needs work. After all, for all but the elite and sub elite, a marathon because of its extreme distance is run at either a fast or slow jog. (I can almost here the screams of condescending derision already from that last remark.)
