In training for my first marathon last year, I did not realize how fast Id go through shoes. Up to then, I had only one pair running shoes because I was just a casual runner who went out for an occasional 5-8 miler once, maybe twice, a week. But now I was running 3 days a week, 20-30 MPW. When my long runs had built up to about 16-17 miles, I started having probs with sore legs (mainly quads), very achy knees & sometimes hips joints, and beat-up feeling feet.
I took a good look at my shoes and was surprised to see how worn theyd become. I bought a couple new pairs of shoes and started rotating them. I also started working on my running form, which was VERY bouncy initially, to reduce unnecessary pounding on my body and energy expenditure. And instead of just plodding along daydreaming or thinking of other things to pass the time when I was really tired, I put extra focus on maintaining good running form.
I dont know which helped me more, but new shoes and work on my running form both made my previous problems go away. Good luck to you!
