Been there half dozen times. Know the area. Marathon finishes in Lahina. It is scenic for Hawaii since it goes along the coast line for most of the race. The race is run on two lane asphalt road which is the main drag from the airport out to the resort area. So yes you will have traffic effects,lots of small rolling hills,not much shade etc. But you are looking at the ocean on one side, the mountains on the other etc. Overall I dont think you will need to do anything much different than training for a summer marathon in most anywhere that has a few hills and some humidity. Drink a little at each aid station. Wear a hat if the sun bothers you. Not really a big deal.
