The race reviews in this website's Marathon Directory say it is a very scenic course, much of it along the coast, well supported but quite hot (little/no shade most of the way). I decided not to because I didn't like real early race start (5am and still dark) and the time of year (Sept) is too warm for me. For more info about the race (course map, elevation, expected temps), see:

I've have visited different parts of Hawaii (Main Island, Kauai, Maui, Big Island) several times over the years and I ran the Kona 1/2 marathon in June 2002 on the Big Island. One thing I would say about training for a Hawaii race held in the summer or early fall is to make sure you can handle the tropical heat and humidity.
Good luck! BTW, I decided on Big Island in Hilo next March.
