Since it is your 1st Marathon, I would take the concervative approach. You want to have a good experience the 1st time out, then try for better times. Take recent 10K or 1/2 marathon times, Use a prediction chart for your Marathon time, then add 5-7 minutes. Now you have a Goal time. Depending on the Marathon (some are geared towards negative splits, some are not) split it into 1/2's. SAY goal is 3:55, run 1:56 and 1:59. Then run the miles to reach the 1st half split at a set pace, continue that pace for the second half allowing your body to slow down when needed. Good Luck and let us know how it went.
