George,
I've met two outstanding young runners. One was a very young girl on a soccer team that I coached. She ran constantly with her father. Years later she was ranked by the Washington Post, I think third among high school girls in the metropolitan area. Then she faded as a runner, not running as a senior or in college due to injuries. However, she never faded academically.
The other was Alan Webb. I met Alan when he was a registrar for the Reston 10 Miler. He said he never himself ran 10 miles at a time. He trained with shorter distances.
So I think a young runner can do very well by limiting himself or herself to high school distances (2 miles or less).
